Star Trek 2 may be holding back the sequel to Cloverfield - Nerd Reactor

One of the hit films of 2008 was JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves‘ found-footage monster movie, Cloverfield. The film gained a huge cult following and was a smash hit at the box-office. Since its release, many fans have been wondering when there would be a sequel.

Recently, Co-writer Drew Groddard gave an update on the films status and why the project is taking so long to come together.

“I’m in, I’m ready to do it, someone call J.J. and tell him to get moving, but because Matt and J.J. and I have been fortunate enough to be busy, it’s hard syncing our schedules up. We’re all very passionate about returning to that world.”

“If you asked each of us what we wanted to do, you’ll get three different answers, which is how the first film was.  The aesthetic of Cloverfield benefits from that.  Three voices pulling it.  Look, nothing would make me happier than to get the three of us in the room to get started but you’ve got this Star Trek thing…”

J.J. Abrams is currently filming the sequel to his highly successful Star Trek reboot and is currently serving as Executive Produce on TV shows Person of Interest and Alcatraz. J.J. is also currently working on two new shows, Revolution and Shelter.

With Matt Reeves’ currently clear schedule and J.J. having no big movie plans following Star Trek 2, hopefully we will see some development on this project soon.

No word yet on what the story would be like for the film. In an interview back in 2008, Matt Reeves stated they have been throwing around some ideas but they wanted to make sure they would a sequel true to the first film.

There’s a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that’s been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy’s briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another.

In an 2010 interview on G4's Attack of the Show, J.J. stated they would more than likely drop the whole found-footage style for something more conventional. No release date has been set but we’ll keep you posted.

On a side note, following the End-Credits of Cloverfield there is a small clip of distorted audio that can be heard at the end. Upon first listen, it seems as though someone is staying “Help us.” Hinting that main characters Rob and Beth may be still alive after the Hammer-down Protocol that has apparently wiped-out Manhattan and destroyed the creature. But, play the audio clip backwards, the clip clearly says “IT’S STILL ALIVE!”
